What it is

What RadioRA 3 Does in a House

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's system for controlling the lighting in a whole house, and the shades too if you want them. The dimmers replace the switches you have now. Keypads replace banks of switches with a few labeled buttons, such as Good Morning, Entertain and Goodnight. A central controller (Lutron calls it a main repeater) sits on your network and holds the scenes and schedules. The Lutron app gives you the same control from your phone.

It is a bigger system than Caséta. A professional installer sets it up and programs it, which is part of what we do. If you are weighing the two, read Caséta vs RadioRA 3.

How we do it

How a RadioRA 3 Install Goes

Walk-through

We go room by room and write down every switch: what it controls, whether it is part of a three-way, what kind of bulbs are on it, and what is in the wall box. Recessed LED lights, chandeliers and low-voltage lighting each want a dimmer matched to the load, so this list decides what we order.

Proposal

You get a written proposal priced room by room, so you can add or drop rooms. We do not publish flat prices for RadioRA 3 because the number depends on the house.

Install and programming

We replace the switches, mount the controller, and program every dimmer and keypad. Keypad buttons are set to the scenes you picked, and we adjust them after you have lived with them for a few days if something feels off.

Walk-through of the app

Before we leave we show you the app, the keypads and any voice or Apple Home setup, and who to call if something misbehaves.

Atlanta houses

What Atlanta Homes Usually Need

Older Atlanta houses often have banks of three or four switches in one box and lights on three-way circuits. A keypad can take the place of a whole bank, which makes the wall look cleaner and puts the scenes where you reach for them. Newer houses tend to have more recessed lighting, and that is where dimmer choice matters most.

We work in Atlanta and Buckhead. For a recent Buckhead job, see a dimmer and keypad install in Buckhead, where we added Lutron lighting during a renovation. Our projects page lists the others.

Planning ahead

Renovations and New Construction

If walls are open, RadioRA 3 is easy to plan for. We mark keypad and dimmer locations on the plans, check that each box has a neutral wire, and note where shade power should go. If you are building, our prewire work for builders covers the same planning.

If the walls are closed, most of the work is still swapping switches. Shades are the exception: wired shades need power at the window, and we tell you early if that means opening a wall. See motorized shades.

Start with the lighting and shades page for an overview of what we install.

FAQs

RadioRA 3 FAQ

Questions we get about Lutron RadioRA 3 in Atlanta and Buckhead.

What is Lutron RadioRA 3?
RadioRA 3 is Lutron's wireless lighting control system for whole houses. Dimmers and keypads replace your wall switches, and a central controller on your network runs the scenes and schedules. Lutron's motorized shades can sit on the same system, so one button can set the lights and the shades.
Do I need new wiring for RadioRA 3?
Usually not. Most dimmers go in the same boxes as your current switches. Some Lutron dimmers need a neutral wire in the box, and older Atlanta houses do not always have one, so we open a sample of boxes at the walk-through and tell you before you commit.
Can RadioRA 3 run motorized shades?
Yes. Lutron shades can be added to the same system and put into the same scenes as the lights. See our guide to motorized shades in Atlanta for the options.
Does RadioRA 3 work with Apple Home, Alexa and Google?
Lutron lists support for all three. Which ones you use is up to you, and we set up the ones you want.
Can I add RadioRA 3 to a house that already has Caséta?
Caséta and RadioRA 3 are separate Lutron systems, so devices from one do not join the other. The switch locations and wiring carry over. We look at what is in the house and tell you what is worth keeping. See Caséta vs RadioRA 3.
Do you install RadioRA 3 in Buckhead as well as the rest of Atlanta?
Yes. We work across Atlanta, including Buckhead and the Chastain Park area. Our Atlanta page covers the wider area.

Type of work
Project photos (optional, but they help a lot)

Photos help us a lot. If you want the fastest, most accurate quote, send photos of the spaces or equipment you're asking about: the room, the wall where the TV goes, your current rack or router, the outside of the house.

Up to 15 photos, 25 MB each. iPhone (HEIC) photos are fine.

    Floor plans (optional)

If you have floor plans, send them. Plans let us do much more, and they often give us a near-instant idea of scope. Large files are fine.
