Types of Motorized Shades

We install Lutron shades. They come in a few styles, and the choice is mostly about looks and light.

Roller shades

A flat fabric that rolls up into a tube at the top of the window. The cleanest look, and a wide range of fabrics from sheer to blackout.

Cellular (honeycomb) shades

Pleated fabric with air pockets inside. They fold up small and are good for rooms where heat and cold coming through the window are the issue.

Roman shades

Soft fabric that folds into pleats as it rises. A better match for formal rooms and dining rooms.

Light filtering or blackout

Light filtering fabric softens the sun and still lets you see out. Blackout fabric blocks it, which most people want in bedrooms. Some windows get both, one layer behind the other.

Power and control

Battery or Wired, and How You Control Them

Battery shades hold their power in the tube and mount without any wiring in the wall. Wired shades take power from a low-voltage supply, so they never need a battery change, but someone has to run power to the window. That is cheap while the walls are open and more work after they are closed.

Once installed, shades can be run from a keypad on the wall, a remote, the Lutron app or a schedule. They can join your lighting scenes, so one button handles both. The lighting side is covered in RadioRA 3 and Caséta vs RadioRA 3, and the overview is on the lighting and shades page.

Cost

What Drives the Cost of Motorized Shades

We do not list prices for shades. Each window is priced on its own, and these are the things that move the number:

  • How many windows, and how wide and tall each one is
  • Shade style and fabric (blackout and dual layer cost more than a single sheer)
  • Battery or wired power
  • Wall or ceiling work to get power to wired shades
  • How many shades are tied into lighting scenes, and what keypads are needed
  • Programming time

A free estimate starts with measuring the windows you want covered. We can price a few key rooms first and add more later.

Atlanta and Buckhead

Shades for Atlanta Homes

Buckhead and Atlanta houses often have tall windows, sunrooms and rooms with a lot of afternoon sun. Those are the windows where motorized shades make the most difference, because they are hard to reach by hand and the glare is a daily problem. See our Buckhead and Atlanta pages for how we work there.

For lighting without shades, the projects page shows recent Lutron dimmer work in Atlanta and Buckhead.

FAQs

Motorized Shades FAQ

Common questions about motorized shades in Atlanta and Buckhead.

Can motorized shades go in a house that is already built?
Yes. Battery-powered shades mount in the window and need no wiring in the wall. Wired shades need power at the window, which is easy with open walls and harder in a finished room. We check each window and tell you which kind fits.
How are the shades controlled?
From a wall keypad, a remote, the Lutron app, or a schedule. They can also be part of a scene with the lights, so Goodnight can dim the lights and close the shades. See RadioRA 3 and Caséta vs RadioRA 3 for which system fits.
Battery or wired shades: which is better?
Wired shades never need a battery change and suit new construction and renovations. Battery shades suit finished rooms and cost less to install, but the batteries need to be replaced eventually. We plan around how easy each window is to reach.
What decides the price of motorized shades?
The number of windows, the size of each one, the shade style, the fabric, battery versus wired power, any wall or ceiling work for power, and how many are tied into a lighting system. Shades are quoted window by window after we measure.
How long do motorized shades take to arrive?
Shades are made to order from your measurements, so there is a wait after the order is placed. We give you the expected lead time in the proposal rather than guessing before we have measured.
Do you install motorized shades in Buckhead?
Yes. We work in Buckhead and across Atlanta. Large windows are common there, so we look at those first.

Type of work
Project photos (optional, but they help a lot)

Photos help us a lot. If you want the fastest, most accurate quote, send photos of the spaces or equipment you're asking about: the room, the wall where the TV goes, your current rack or router, the outside of the house.

Up to 15 photos, 25 MB each. iPhone (HEIC) photos are fine.

    Floor plans (optional)

If you have floor plans, send them. Plans let us do much more, and they often give us a near-instant idea of scope. Large files are fine.
